Heather Grimm

@HeadyGrimm

JLM Couture: Describe your gown (style 2354).

Heather: I am obsessed with the gown I wore! Oh my lordy it was so comfortable and flattering! It had an elegant high neckline, a delicate and fitted lacy bodice, and a sheer ruffled bottom. The fit was lovely. I had a blast wearing it! Especially once we added in the dainty birdcage veil, my big bulky camera, and a chunky oversized sweater to photograph our 4th model haha! What a sight.

JLM Couture: What was your favorite element of this dress?

Heather: My favorite element of this dress was the super flattering shape. I was also in love with how comfortable it was. I could have stayed in that dress for hours. It just sat well on the body.

JLM Couture: Give us 3 words that describe a Tara Keely Bride:

Heather: Timelessly, beautifully unique.

Q&A With Cottonwood South!

Remember Heather Grimm? You can refresh your memory with our interview with her here! Not only did she (along with Catherine Guidry) photograph our #TKinNOLA shoot, but she styled it with these amazing calligraphy notes and custom drawings. Oh- and she modeled for us too (more on her and our beautiful #TKinNOLA ladies tomorrow!) But today we’re chatting about her new venture, Cottonwood South!

You can find them here on Facebook and here on Instagram!

JLM Couture: We are HUGE fans of your calligraphy work. How did you get started?

Heather: Thank y’all so much !! I have always been a doodler and into all things artsy, so I guess you could say I’ve been at it since I was a kid. However, as far as traditional calligraphy goes, I began playing around with a real calligraphy nib and ink sometime over the last year. A family friend hired me to address her daughter’s wedding envelopes and I’ve been in love ever since :)

JLM Couture: Do you do custom orders for couples getting married? (Fingers crossed!)

Heather: I do! As I am becoming increasingly busy, I am taking less custom orders. I will always try to keep the option open though :) There are few things more special about a wedding than incorporating customized elements, whether it be a Save the Date card design, guest table signage, or a cute signature cocktail menu . It’s your day, it should look and feel like you!

202-TARA_KEELY

JLM Couture:What is your favorite piece from this shoot?

Heather: My favorite piece would have to be the plunging neckline sheath dress. That dress is a showstopper for sure! I love the thick lace texture on the top and the ridiculously smooth bottom. The fit is insane! It’s the perfect balance of sexy and elegant. There is just the right amount of intrigue to make you fall in love with the dress, yet the design and flow are simple enough to make the bride still stand out.

Tara Keely

JLM Couture: Do you have an tips and tricks to share with us for long lasting wedding day hair and make-up?

Q&A With Heather Grimm!

Heather Grimm Photography

JLM Couture: When did you get started in photography?

Heather: I bought a basic intro camera from Best Buy at the end of 2012 just for fun! Shortly after, I began taking & posting photos of my little cousins and friends to my Facebook page. A few weeks later, I had strangers emailing me to photograph their families! I still had no idea how to work the camera properly or knew anything about running my own business, but I decided to roll with it! 3 months later, it was my full time job and I was having an absolute blast. So I guess you can say it all unfolded in 2013 :) Was that really only 2 years ago?

Lace Ball Gown

JLM Couture: What made you want to get in to wedding photography?

Heather: To me, wedding photography is on such another level that I would have to say my ambitious nature drove me there. I always want to see how far I can push myself in all of my endeavors; how far I can go. When I first began entertaining the idea of wedding photography, I reached out to a handful of local photographers to offer myself up as a volunteer second shooter (for no pay, just the experience). Not a single one of them responded to me. I eventually gave up trying to second shoot with someone and found a craigslist bride who was looking for a last minute photographer for her wedding. I jumped on the opportunity and offered my services to her for free. This was terrifying and exciting all in one! I had only been to 2 weddings in the past 5 years; I could hardly remember how they functioned! But I was determined to learn and was fueled by the disappointing lack of photographers willing to give me the time of day. That wedding ended up being a turning point in my career. I gained so much confidence in my skills, as well as knowledge; I felt ready to take on a larger, more traditional wedding by myself. I think having never been a second shooter or having guidance in any way, I was even prouder of everything I had learned, everything I had achieved, by myself. Before I knew it, I had 5 weddings on the books with dozens of requests coming in. I couldn’t believe it! I even had the opportunity to fly to Austin, Texas to photograph one of the most beautiful weddings ever. It was all such a wild learning experience that I ventured into alone. Sometimes you just have to create your own path and make it happen! I will always be proud of that.

Tara Keely

JLM Couture: What’s your favorite photo from this shoot and why?

Heather: Oh, that’s so hard! This shoot was definitely one of my favorites. I can’t pick just one! They are all soft, dreamy, dramatic, romantic. I love these particular close up shots of our gorgeous models because they really provoke emotion. I also LOVE the florals and the greenery. The makeup is flawless. The dresses are stunning! SO many reasons I love these shots :)

JLM Couture: We’d ask you to describe your vision of a Tara Keely bride, but luckily for us- you are one! Tell us a few things about why you chose your Tara Keely gown.

Heather: What a great question! I actually found my dress pretty late in my engagement. Having tried on a handful of less-than-exciting-dresses at a few local of boutiques, I was about ready to call it quits! I just couldn’t find anything unique enough to suit my style, my budget, and the overall feeling I wanted my dress to have. After a thorough google search of bridal boutiques in a neighboring city, I found one that had quite a variety of designers on hand. However, I decided to go by myself this time. I wanted to look at these dresses without any outside opinion or persuasion (even the good kind!). I wanted to make this decision for myself. I showed up at the adorable shop and was greeted by a kind woman who walked around with me as I selected multiple dresses to try on. Picking out options was easy because I knew the style I wanted… or so I thought. Right when I thought we couldn’t carry another trumpet style dress, my hand brushed past a poofy tulle and lace dress. I stalled for 1 second too long and the sweet lady suggested I try it on. I wasn’t exactly eager since the style was all wrong, but she convinced me to just give it a shot :) After the fourth dress of twelve was returned to the rack, I slipped on the wild card dress for fun haha. I shuffled out to the floor like a fluffy white cupcake, climbed upon the platform, was zipped and clamped, and when I looked up at the my reflection in the mirror, I started to cry. I couldn’t believe what was happening. Crying when you find your dress was supposed to be a myth right?! Isn’t that just in the movies? Apparently not because this defeated skeptic just stood there crying, bouncing up and down and shrieking! Refusing to take the dress off, I sat in the pretty velvet boutique chair, in my gorgeous soon-to-be wedding gown, and called my mom and best friends. It was perfect.

JLM Couture: When did you get started in photography?

Catherine: Although I dabbled a bit in photography during my undergraduate years studying architecture, I photographed my first wedding during graduate school. When I finally finished my masters I decided to pursue photography full time with a focus on weddings!

New Orleans Weddings_Tara Keely_Bridal

JLM Couture: What made you want to get into wedding photography?

Catherine: I knew I enjoyed photography but more specifically, I loved photographing people: the emotions, the moments, the memories. I love that wedding photography combines all these aspects of shooting with an element of style and fashion.

JLM Couture: What’s your favorite photo from this shoot and why?

Catherine: My favorite image would be the one of all the models together. It shows the diversity in style and options that Tara Keely offers! There’s truly something for everyone.

JLM Couture: So, we’re obsessed with all the gorgeous florals you pulled together for our #TKinNOLA shoot. Can you let us know what’s in each arrangement?

Destiny: Thank you! The peach and pink bouquet included juliet garden roses, romantic antique garden roses, calcynia, pink calla lilies and ranunculus accented with silver dollar and seeded eucalyptus. The white bouquet included garden roses, ranunculus, scabiosa  and freesia accented with cherry laurel.

Tara Keely

JLM Couture: This floral crown is everything. Did you teach yourself how to make them?

Destiny: Ha! I did teach myself how to make them! Starting off with a lot of flower tape and hot glue, they would take me hours and I would just hope and pray that they would stay together. Thank goodness I have become a bit more adept at making them!

Tara Keely

JLM Couture: Which was your favorite piece from this shoot?

DestinyI am really in love with whites and greens lately, so it would have to be the white bouquet. The contrast of the whites with the darker greens is just so pretty!

JLM Couture: Describe the perfect bouquet for a Tara Keely bride.

Destiny: The perfect bouquet for a Tara Keely bride is one that makes the bride feel special and beautiful on the most important day of her life. It has to depict the personality of both the bride and the dress.

Our Valentine’s Day Love Story Winner!

I put on my cheerleading uniform, tied my white tennis shoes, fluffed my ponytail and slicked on my shiniest lip gloss. I was ready! He was definitely going to be there tonight. I had heard about him from mutual friends for weeks on end. My 16-year old imagination had idealized this upcoming moment and replayed a thousand different scenarios. Maybe it would be love at first sight? Maybe he would ask me out on a date right then and there! The only problem was…I didn’t know what he looked like (and they refused to tell me)!

It was the start of basketball season and we were playing our rival high school at home. I had my dad drop me off early to scope out the other team hoping I would know who he was when I saw him. I watched them practice drills and darted my eyes around the court hoping my heart would alert me. I scanned and scanned. Nothing. No butterflies in my stomach. No heart palpitations. Nothing like I had imagined.

The rest of the girls arrived and we got in line to cheer on our team. I stood there feeling very confused. My friends had promised he would be there and they were smiling and waving at me from the stands. For weeks, they had filled my heart with endless excitement. They had rattled on about his achievements at his school, his sportsmanship and his overall good looks. It was enough to make you daydream right through Algebra II.

“You’ll know it the moment you see him!” “Y’all are meant to be!” “You guys are going to get married!”

The announcer boomed over the speaker and prepared to announce the starting line-up. Rival team up first. He whirred through their names and positions and then began to read the final name, the team captain. The world hit pause as a 17-year-old boy ran out onto the court. His wavy charcoal black hair matched perfectly with his beautiful smile. It was him. He was there! (He had been in the locker room…)

Hayley Paige Valentines day 1

***

On June 15, 2013, that handsome boy and I were married in Austin, TX… nine and a half years after we first met on that special day. I was no longer standing in front of the teenager I fell in love with at a high school gymnasium, but a wonderful, kind-hearted man. We were high school sweethearts, dated through college, moved to a new city, bought a house and rescued three beautiful dogs. When you write your life out like that, it appears to be an ideal timeline of the natural progression of life and love. Those major occasions are the plotted points on the graph of life. However, in between the big moments, you find the true nitty gritty of any relationship; the real reason why people fall in love and stay in love. It’s in the tiniest of memories, the smallest inside jokes and the quickest of glances across a crowded room. Those are the details that serve as the glue between two people. Dating for nearly a decade isn’t always a cake walk. There are joyous years and hard years, happy months and sad months, weeks spent making memories and weeks spent alone, memorable days and ones that are difficult to look back on. No love story was ever successful because both people did everything right. The success lies in the promise that a future as one is brighter than a lifetime apart. It’s in the glue.

Hayley Paige Valentines day 2

Hayley Paige Valentines day 5

***

The day I walked down the aisle to the person I have now enjoyed 11 years of life with, I was wearing a Blush by Hayley Paige style from Now and Forever Boutique in Houston, TX. (Thanks, Vo!) It was the third dress I tried on and I decided it was the one before I even stepped out of the dressing room. I chose it because I wanted to be comfortable and look natural on my wedding day. I wanted to dance and twirl and hug and kiss every person there. The dress was meant for me, like it had been designed just for my memories. I didn’t need to scan the room. I didn’t need my friends to tell me all about it. It was there…ready and waiting to be mine.
