Jeff and Mattie
My parents grew up in Kansas but eventually moved to Idaho to raise their family. When I started college, I started school in Oklahoma then transferred to a school in Hays, Kansas. I would travel back to the small town of Frankfort to visit my grandmother, and I had made many friends including the parents of some of the people I spent time with. As time went on, the town, including Jeff’s mother, decided to set us up. Mutual friends would invite us to the bar and we would be maneuvered into sitting together. We started talking and discovered a mutual attraction as well as many common interests. After several months of friendship, Jeff finally asked me out. Our first date ended up being at Hooters because every other restaurant he tried to take me to was extremely busy. Jeff was the first to say I love you a few months into our relationship, and I knew I loved him too, but I was nervous to say it back. Our relationship continued to grow, and we knew we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. When we discussed getting engaged, I told Jeff I wanted my parents there as well as our dog, Gus. A little over a year into our relationship, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. For Christmas that year, I wanted nothing more than to go to Idaho and spend time with my mom. Jeff’s Christmas present to me that year was to drive us to Idaho to spend time with my parents. We stayed in a cabin with my parents, Gus, and family friends. On the last day, which was my mom’s birthday, we were taking pictures outside in the snow when Jeff pulled out a ring and dropped to his knee, asking me to marry him. I was so shocked even though I had known it would happen eventually. We took a little less than a year to plan our perfect outdoor country wedding, and we were married on October 8, 2016 on the land that Jeff’s family has owned for generations. It’s my favorite place in the entire world, and now I have the memory of my wedding day in that special spot as well.
